India’s boxer Mary Kom is celebrating her birthday today. Mary Kom was born on 1 March 1983 in Manipur.

Mary Kom is the only woman boxer from India to have won a medal in each of the 6 World Championships.

In 2014, Mary Kom became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.

Mary Kom has won 10 national titles so far, in 2003 Mary Kom was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Government of India. Mary Kom also received the Padma Shri in the year 2006.

Mary Kom interesting story when was traveling to Punjab –

Mary Kom was going from Manipur to Punjab for a national camp. She tied her suitcase tightly with a chain to her wrist. The suitcase contained her money, passport and some important documents. Despite taking all measures, her suitcase was stolen in the train.

Only that chain left in hand. Recalling that incident, Mary Kom said in an interview, “My financial situation was not good. The first international tournament was just a few days away. I was terrified after the passport was stolen. Well I faced every situation firmly. Is, but at that time I started thinking about ending myself. “
Mary Kom was quite upset. She did not understand how she would prepare herself for the upcoming tournament. Her passport and money were stolen. In such a difficult time, Honor Karong came forward to help Mary Kom. Karong was the president of the North-East Students’ Association in those days. She tries to find the lost passport of Mary and this is where the love of the two begins.

Onler first met Mary Kom at the Nehru Stadium in Delhi. She supported Mary from the beginning. They took care of every need from Mary Kom’s money to home food. The two married in 2005 after a four-year friendship.
