India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to begin service in September 2025, just ahead of the festive season, promising to redefine overnight train travel with a blend of comfort, speed, and modern amenities. The project builds on the success of the Vande Bharat semi-high-speed fleet and aims to offer a premium experience for long-distance passengers.
Official Announcement in Gujarat
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking at an event in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, confirmed the launch timeline. “Vande Sleeper is coming very soon – in September,” he said. The milestone follows recent developments like the Vande Bharat Express, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains, marking another leap in Indian Railways’ modernisation journey.
Additional New Train Services
Alongside the sleeper train announcement, Vaishnaw also unveiled three new services:
- Rewa–Pune Express
- Bhavnagar Terminus–Ayodhya Cantt Express
- Jabalpur–Raipur Express
Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Coach
The upcoming semi-high-speed EMU (electric multiple unit) is specially designed for overnight travel and will include:
- 16 coaches accommodating around 1,128 passengers across AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier categories.
- Maximum speed of 180 km/h, offering faster journeys than conventional overnight trains.
- Modern interiors, enhanced safety systems, and passenger-friendly features for an upgraded travel experience.
