Mumbai Watermelon Deaths: A Saturday night feast turned fatal in Mumbai when 4 members of a family died within hours of consuming a watermelon. According to eyewitnesses, the watermelon was bought by Abdullah himself from a market close to the mosque in Null Bazaaar. Abdullah’s relatives have raised serious concerns about food adulteration and demanded an investigation.
According to Mumbai Police, the family shared biryani pulao with five other relatives around 10:30pm but none of them reported any symptoms. The watermelon was consumed only by the four (two sisters and their parents) around 1 am on Sunday.
Mumbai Watermelon Deaths-Turn Of Events
The family members were residents of Bhendi Bazaar. The 44-year-old Abdullah Dodakia owned a mobile phone accessories shop in Andheri. His wife Nasreen (35) and daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (12) all were admitted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai.

Doctors concluded that it is “highly unlikely” that a stale watermelon could cause their death and revealed that all medical efforts failed to save them. Initially, Zainab died around 10:30am followed by Nasreen, Ayesha and Abdullah.
A Police Officer remarked that the statements of the wife and husband were recorded. According to their statement, the health of everyone deteriorated after consuming the watermelon. The wife and husband communicated in the statement that they all started experiencing vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming the fruit. The watermelon’s samples have been sent for testing and post-mortem and forensic reports are pending.
AIMIM Leader Waris Pathan Steps In
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan posted on X that it is a very sad, serious and heart-wrenching incident. Pathan said the health of four members of a family deteriorated after consuming a watermelon.
The AIMIM leader urged the state government to initiate an inquiry to find out the exact cause of their deaths and make the reports public at the earliest.
