Nitin Gadkari: While addressing the Zero Mile Samvad event organised by IIM Nagpur, Nitin Gadkari has recently said “Driverless cars will take away jobs, won’t allow these in India”. The Central Minister’s statement makes clear that currently there is no space for autonomous driving cars in the Indian automobile market. He added Gadkari slammed the door shut on autonomous or self-driving vehicles. "I will never allow driverless cars to come into India because it will take away the jobs of several drivers and I will not let that happen," he said "The technology is meant for countries with small populations but not India."
The minister highlighted that if autonomous car will come to India. Around 80 lakh drivers will lose their jobs which can eventually result in slow economic growth. The minister said that “ "I said in the US itself that I will not allow driverless cars in India at any cost. This is because in our country, a large number of people work as drivers and driverless cars will, therefore, snatch their jobs."
Nitin Gadkari has been seen addressing this concern several times before this. He holds a great stance on not allowing autonomous vehicles in India. Earlier, the minister mentioned a similar reason for not allowing such vehicles to enter India.
Autonomous Vehicles: Safe or Unsafe?
Autonomous vehicles can run without any human intervention. These vehicles require minimal or no human intervention to drive. This technology will pose threats to the driver jobs in India. Another reason for not allowing autonomous driving cars in India is that agencies across the world remain sceptical of the reliability of such vehicles.
These autonomous driving vehicles are aided by a variety of sensors and radars to run on roads. Whereas, the ADAS suite is now becoming a common offering in the Indian automobile market. There are 6 levels of ADAS in total as per The Society of Automotive Engineers and Level 5 is when a car becomes an autonomous vehicle that needs no human interference. As an advanced technology, we can appreciate such innovations in cars, but we can’t completely rely on such vehicles. We are saying the leading auto brand manufacturing autonomous vehicles has recently recalled around 2 million vehicles to fix a possible flaw with the autonomous driving system.
