Patna Sasaram Corridor: In a major step towards improving connectivity in Bihar, the Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a four-lane highway between Patna, Arrah and Sasaram. Known as the Patna Sasaram Corridor, the new route will span over 120.10 km and is expected to cut long travel hours, reduce congestion and open up employment opportunities across the state. The project, estimated to cost ₹3,712 crore, is aimed at improving travel speed and connectivity between key regions.

What Is the Patna Sasaram Corridor? Key Features and Benefits

The Patna Sasaram Corridor will include both greenfield and brownfield segments. Out of the total 120.10 km stretch, around 109.5 km will be greenfield, built on new land to avoid crowded zones. The remaining 10.6 km is brownfield, where existing roads will be upgraded.

This access-controlled highway will have limited entry and exit points, ensuring faster and safer movement. The construction has been divided into two parts:

  • Package 1: A 74.43 km greenfield road from Sasaram to Arrah. This part will be completed in 24 months.
  • Package 2: A combination of 45.67 km greenfield and 10.6 km brownfield road from Arrah to Patna. This stretch has a deadline of 30 months.

A significant feature of this project is a 4-lane bridge over the Son River, spanning nearly 3 km, which will greatly aid in smoother travel.

How Will Patna Sasaram Corridor Improve Travel in Bihar?

At present, travel between Patna, Arrah, and Sasaram depends on overcrowded state highways. These routes often take 3–4 hours due to frequent traffic jams in areas like Grahini, Piro, Bikramganj and Mokar.

With the Patna Sasaram Corridor, daily traffic of 17,000 to 20,000 vehicles is expected in 2025. It will also connect to national highways like NH-19, NH-319, NH-922, NH-131G, and NH-120, making travel across Bihar smoother and more efficient.

What Major Infrastructure Will the Corridor Connect?

This new highway will significantly improve access to:

  • Airports: Patna Airport and the upcoming Bihta Airport
  • Railway Stations: Sasaram, Arrah, Danapur, and Patna
  • Inland Water Terminal: Located in Patna
  • Patna Ring Road: For better city-wide travel

The corridor will also support regional movement to big cities such as Lucknow, Ranchi, Varanasi, and Patna, enhancing trade and tourism across eastern India.

How Many Jobs Will the Patna Sasaram Corridor Create?

One of the biggest advantages of the Patna Sasaram Corridor is employment. The project is expected to generate 48 lakh man-days of work — with 22 lakh direct jobs and 26 lakh indirect opportunities. This will provide a major economic push to Bihar’s local population, especially in areas like Arrah and Sasaram, while strengthening the state’s overall infrastructure backbone.
