Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: The celebration of Holi is almost here. Millions of individuals will receive free LPG cylinders on this special day. You heard correctly. On the occasion of Holi, the state government of Uttar Pradesh will give away free gas cylinders to residents. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana recipients will need to link their bank account with Aadhaar to do this.
Launch of Free LPG Cylinder Refill Distribution Campaign
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’s free LPG cylinder refill distribution campaign in November of last year, catering to the state’s 1.75 crore qualifying families. On the occasions of Diwali and Holi twice a year, the government intends to provide free LPG cylinders. LPG cylinders were distributed as part of this programme in November in honour of Diwali. Beneficiaries will now receive this gift on Holi as well. For this scheme, the state government is investing Rs 2,312 crore.
Inception of Ujjwala Programme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ujjwala programme in 2016. More than 9 crore people have received free LPG connections as a result of this programme. The government provides a 300 rupee subsidy each cylinder under this initiative.
This subsidy was formerly Rs 200 and was only raised by an extra Rs 100 last year. This subsidy is given to the eligible category for a total of 12 LPG cylinders per year. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was expanded last year, with plans to release 75 lakh LPG connections in three years, from the 2023–2024 fiscal year to the 2025–2026 fiscal year.
Scaling Ujjwala Reach
By the time 75 lakh more Ujjwala connections are made available, there will be 10.35 crore PMUY beneficiaries overall. The government had already lowered the cost of LPG cylinders by Rs 200 last year. Following this discount, Delhi’s general public can purchase an LPG cylinder for Rs 903 after this deduction.
