Translation:
“Today, on the occasion of Saragarhi Day, we salute the supreme sacrifice of 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment, who fought bravely against 10,000 Pathans and attained martyrdom. The courage, determination, and valor of these brave Sikh soldiers remain unmatched in the world.”

Remembering the Historic Battle of Saragarhi

The Battle of Saragarhi, fought on 12th September 1897, is celebrated as one of the greatest last-stand battles in military history. Stationed in the North-West Frontier of British India (now in Pakistan), 21 Sikh soldiers defended their communication post against a massive force of approximately 10,000 Afghan tribesmen (Pathans). Despite being heavily outnumbered, these soldiers chose to fight to the last man rather than surrender, showing unparalleled bravery.

This legendary battle symbolizes unwavering courage, supreme sacrifice, and deep patriotism. The defense by the 36th Sikh Regiment prevented the enemy from cutting off British communications in the region, playing a crucial role in maintaining strategic stability during turbulent times.

Punjab’s Reverence for Martyrs

CM Bhagwant Mann emphasized that the valor of these martyrs is a shining example for current and future generations. He called on the youth of Punjab and India to remember the sacrifices that built the nation’s strong foundation. The government also organizes various programs each year on Saragarhi Diwas to honor the legacy of these heroes through memorial ceremonies, exhibitions, and educational activities.

In his message, the Chief Minister reiterated that such acts of selflessness and heroism must be kept alive in public memory. He expressed his commitment to preserving the rich military history of Punjab and fostering a sense of pride and respect for armed forces among citizens.

Legacy that Inspires

The legacy of the 36 Sikh Regiment’s supreme sacrifice continues to inspire soldiers and citizens alike. Memorials and monuments dedicated to the martyrs of Saragarhi stand as a constant reminder of their indomitable spirit.

CM Mann concluded his message with “Koti Koti Pranam” (many heartfelt salutations) to these immortal heroes, urging everyone to draw strength from their courage, especially in today’s times when the values of duty, honor, and patriotism are more important than ever.
