In a significant political development, tensions have arisen in Jammu and Kashmir as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders voiced their concern over the detention of their colleagues. Recently, AAP MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, was taken into police custody, prompting AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Anurag Dhanda, AAP National Media In-Charge, to visit Srinagar in protest.

Anurag Dhanda shared a powerful video message on his social media platform X, expressing concern over the restrictions placed on democratic engagement in Jammu and Kashmir. In his message, he pointed out the contradiction where even the father of the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister could not meet a sitting Member of Parliament. He remarked,
“Farooq Abdullah – The government is ours, the Master has become the Lieutenant Governor. Sanjay Singh – I am an elected MP, and he is a multiple-time Chief Minister. Why are we not allowed to meet?”

Dhanda concluded by questioning the democratic values under the current administration, appealing directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi:
“Modi Ji, is this your vision of democracy?”

Further adding to the debate, AAP MP Sanjay Singh expressed his strong disappointment via a social media post, sharing that Farooq Abdullah had attempted to meet him at the government guest house after learning about Singh’s house arrest, but the police denied the meeting. Singh termed the situation as a growing authoritarian tendency, stating:
“It is extremely saddening that Dr. Farooq Abdullah, a multiple-time Chief Minister, was not allowed to meet me. This is not democracy, this is the height of tyranny. We are in Srinagar to raise our voice for constitutional rights. Today, we were scheduled to hold a press conference and protest against Mehraj Malik’s unlawful arrest, but the government guest house was turned into a police cantonment.”

Sanjay Singh further asserted that neither he nor his colleague Imran Hussain were allowed to leave the guest house premises.

This series of developments highlights growing political unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and raises important questions regarding democratic processes and the right to peaceful protest. The AAP leadership continues to stand firm on its commitment to democratic rights and accountability, calling for transparent governance and the immediate release of detained leaders.
