Shashi Tharoor: The Indian National Congress (INC) has established two key panels for the forthcoming assembly elections in Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor and party’s working committee member Ramesh Chennithala have been appointed co-chairman and chairman, respectively.

The appointment of Tharoor assumes great significance after Tharoor had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi, former INC chief, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for the redressal of Tharoor’s grievances. Since then, the Thiruvananthapuram MP has been a prominent speaker for the Congress party.

Shashi Tharoor-New Responsibilities Ahead

The campaign committee’s convenor would be MP Shafi Parambil and its members include Roji M John, C R Mahesh, Mathew Kuzhalnadan, Ramya Haridas, M Liju, Hibi Eden and Deepthi Mary Varghese.

Benny Behanan would be the manifesto committe’s chairman and Kodikkunnil Suresh, the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, as the chairman.

Feud In The Past

The articulate Congress MP irked the party high command when he spoke in the favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Operation Sindoor. Tharoor also led an all-party delegation after the Pahalgam terror attack, without apparent party consensus. Many in the party accused Tharoor of maligning the history of Congress and even made calls to expel him from the party.

Shashi Tharoor had previously skipped several party meetings after being snubbed at a party event. After months of turbulent ties, Tharoor would now capitalize on his growing national stature and appeal among young, urban voters in Kerala.

The decision that was announced by the Congress party’s high command comes at a crucial point as the party is trying to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) to make a return to power in the state. Elections in the state are likely to happen in the month of April or May 2026.
