Tamil Nadu Political Crisis: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Thalapathy Vijay has threatened that all of its 108 MLA would resign in protest if E Palaniswami’s AIADMK or MK Stalin’s DMK tries to stake claim to form the Tamil Nadu government.
This was after TN Governor RV Arlekar refused to allow the TVK supremo to stake claim, saying he doesn’t possess the required majority numbers. Arlekar also refused to accept the suggestion that the TVK would soon reach the majority mark.
Tamil Nadu Political Crisis-Latest Updates
Tamil Nadu politics has rarely witnessed a disruption as dramatic as the one engineered by actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). TVK stunningly secured 108 seats, outperforming both the DMK and AIADMK in several urban and semi-urban constituencies, sending shockwaves across the state’s political establishment.
For decades, Tamil Nadu voters alternated between two Dravidian giants. However, Vijay’s aggressive anti-establishment campaign, youth-centric messaging and cinematic mass appeal helped TVK rapidly transform from a political experiment into a formidable electoral machine.
DON'T MISS
Several media reports suggested that crowds that once gathered for movie releases converted into booth-level political workers. His campaign speeches drew unprecedented enthusiasm among first-time voters, middle-class urban residents and sections disillusioned with traditional parties.
VCK And Left Fallout With TVK
The Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) initially viewed TVK as a vehicle to counter both the BJP’s expanding ambitions and the Dravidian duopoly. But cracks emerged almost immediately after the results. Disagreements reportedly intensified over cabinet formation, leadership style and fears that TVK intended to monopolize political credit while treating allies as secondary players.
Within sections of the VCK leadership, there appears to be concern that TVK’s broad populist framework sidelines identity-based political priorities in favour of personality-centric mass mobilization.
The Future Ahead
VCK won 2 seats while the Left won 4 seats (2 CPI and 2 CPM). There is a slight possibility that Vijay may join hands with Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) that won 4 seats or the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) that won 2 seats.
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the current crisis is the belief that either the DMK or AIADMK could eventually support Vijay to stabilize governance. That possibility is virtually non-existent as supporting Vijay now would amount to politically legitimizing the very force attempting to replace them. DMK and AIADMK would not join hands together as they are polar opposites of each other in terms of political ideology.
