Asia Cup 2023: The clash of cricket titans, India and Pakistan, hangs in the balance as the 2023 Asia Cup looms. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Najam Sethi, has sounded a warning that his board could lose a staggering USD 3 million in revenue if his team doesn’t participate in the tournament. Sethi revealed that a significant portion, nearly 80%, of the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) expected revenue will be generated from the high-octane match between these two cricketing giants.
Asia Cup 2023’s future uncertain
The tournament’s hosting rights are shrouded in uncertainty, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stated that it will not participate in the tournament if it is entirely held in Pakistan. Security concerns are at the heart of this matter, and the tournament is scheduled to be held in September 2023. Sethi has come to a tentative agreement with the BCCI, proposing a hybrid format for hosting the Asia Cup, with India’s matches to be played in another country. In contrast, Pakistan would host the remaining games at home.
In the face of adversity, Sethi has made it clear that Pakistan will not compromise its hosting rights for the Asia Cup. He further reiterated that security concerns are not a legitimate excuse for India not to play in Pakistan. Sethi even went so far as to challenge India to provide written proof from their national government if they are not cleared to play in Pakistan. In contrast, countries like Australia, England, and New Zealand have been more than willing to play in Pakistan.
