AUS vs WI: Steve Smith on the same bench with Don Bradman as he smashes a blistering double hundred | Watch video

AUS vs WI: Australia was able to keep up with their dominance in the test against the West Indies on Thursday thanks to Steve Smith, who hit an unbeaten 200 to match Donald Bradman’s record of 29 Test hundreds.

On the last ball before lunch on the second day, Marnus Labuschagne (204) was dismissed, and Australia took a 402-to-3 lead into the break.

Steve Smith smashes 29th test hundred

A catch was eventually taken by wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva after Labuschagne was dropped twice on 132 and 194. Labuschagne had just hit his 20th boundary off fast bowler Jayden Seales when he was dismissed for edged offspinner Roston Chase.

As Australia opened the second day on 293-2, with Labuschagne on 154 and Smith on 59, the West Indies were eager for a breakthrough in the dismal conditions that were ideal for swing bowling. Instead, Labuschagne and Smith continued their dominant play against the visitors from the previous night, stealing the game with each run.

Steve becomes third highest-century scorer for Australia

Smith batted brilliantly in his 88th test match to tie former Australian batting icon Don Bradman. Only Steve Waugh (32) and Ricky Ponting (41) have scored more hundreds for Australia. Smith was more cautious, only scoring nine boundaries in 179 balls for his century. Following his 145 not out against Sri Lanka in Galle earlier this year, Smith has scored two centuries in three innings.

After scoring 215 against New Zealand in Sydney in January 2020, Labuschagne now has two centuries in as many months. Out of 350 balls, he hit a six and 20 fours during his 483 minutes of batting.
