Australian Open 2023: Andrey Rublev advanced to the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday by defeating wild-card entrant Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Despite missing much of 2021 due to injury, Thiem, who finished second at the Australian Open in 2020 and won the US Open the same year, has risen from outside the top 350 to just within the top 100. The tournament's organisers gave him a wild-card admission.

Rublev to clash with Max Purcell

Rublev said, “When you see you have to play against Dominic you know it’s not going to be easy. I know he’s going through some not easy times so I wish him all the best to come back to the level he can be as fast as possible.”

Now, Max Purcell of Australia or Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland will compete against Rublev. By defeating Tereza Martincova 6-1, 6-4, No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka continued her unblemished start to the year. Sabalenka, who won the Adelaide International championship in the opening week of the year, out-struck her opponent 29 to 7 winners as she won her sixth straight match.

Sabalenka, who will compete against Shelby Rogers, an American, in the next round said, “It wasn’t that easy, I’m super-happy to start with the win, I have to work on my mindset and stay calm and not get too upset when I make mistakes. I really believe this is the only thing missing in my game.”

In her previous five appearances at the Australian Open, Sabalenka, who has yet to claim a Grand Slam singles championship, failed to go past the fourth round.
