What did Nick Kyrgios say for the Australian Open?

But a day before he was scheduled to play Russian Roman Safiullin in the first round, knee pain caused him to withdraw. Along with Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios intended to defend his doubles championship. In a press conference called in Melbourne, he said “I’m devastated, obviously.”

Continuing further, he said “I’ve had some great tournaments here, winning the doubles last year and playing the tennis of my life probably going into this event. Pretty brutal, one of the most important tournaments of my year and it hasn’t been easy. There’s a mixture of emotions… just bad timing, but that’s life. injuries are part of the sport.”

Injury is not career-threatening : Physio Will Maher

According to his physio Will Maher, a scan revealed a cyst as a result of a little rupture in his lateral meniscus, but the damage was not life-threatening. The damaged knee was tested by Kyrgios’s staff during a charity match against Novak Djokovic on Friday, and the Australian “didn’t pull up great.”

The 27-year-old stated on Saturday that it was stressful and difficult to concentrate because of expectations that he may do well in the first Grand Slam of the year. The contentious Australian said, though, that he was humbled to be in a situation where he was seen to have a good chance of winning his maiden Grand Slam. The skill of Kyrgios has always been obscured by his many temper outbursts, but he had a fantastic year in 2022, reaching his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon and then falling to Djokovic.
