Bangladesh vs India: Rohit Sharma becomes first Indian to hit 500 sixes in ODIs

Rohit Sharma becomes the first Indian and just the second batter to hit 500 sixes in ODIs. Rohit achieved the feat during the second ODI vs Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The skipper was injured during the second game and didn’t come to open the innings. But later when Team India was struggling, Rohit came to bat at No. 9 even after being injured. He played a sensational knock (51 not out off 28 balls) with three fours and five sixes, to give India a chance but in the end, failed to get them over the line.

Rohit’s tally of 500 international sixes is bettered by only West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who has 533 sixes. No other Indian batter has more than 400 sixes. MS Dhoni with 359 sixes is the closest to Rohit among Indian players.

The likes of Shahid Afridi (476), Brendon McCullum (398), and Martin Guptill (383) are the third, fourth and fifth place respectively in the list of most six hitters in international cricket.

Rohit seemed to be unhappy with the team’s performance in the second ODI which cost India the series. Bangladesh took unaccessible 2-0 in the three-match series lead.

“From being 69/6, allowing them to get to 270-odd wasn’t a great effect from our bowlers. We started well but the middle overs and the back end is what’s hurting us a lot. Happened in the last game as well. It’s something we need to work on. Not taking anything away from Mehidy and Mahmudullah, was a great partnership but we also need to find ways of breaking such partnerships,” said Rohit after losing the match.
