BCCI: Board calls up URGENT meeting in Ahmedabad ! Shreyas Iyer’s replacement, NCA’s response to constant injuries on cards

BCCI: The BCCI selection committee, led by Shiv Sundar Das, is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting today. The primary focus of the meeting is to identify a replacement for Shreyas Iyer, who will miss the upcoming ODI series against Australia due to lower back pain.

Shreyas Iyer’s back injury

Iyer was taken for scans after the third day of play in the Ahmedabad Test, which revealed a recurrence of his back injury. As a result, the decision has been made not to risk him in the upcoming ODI series. Sanju Samson is the likely candidate to be called up for the three-match ODI series, having previously been omitted from the squad. The series is slated to begin on March 17th in Chennai.

Shreyas Iyer’s back injury caused him to miss the ODI series against Sri Lanka and the first Test against Australia. Following 15 days of rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy, he was swiftly brought back for the second Test in Delhi without undergoing any gradual return to play protocols. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a relapse of his injury, leading to his exclusion from the upcoming ODI series against Australia.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided not to take any chances with Iyer, given the upcoming WTC Final and World Cup. Consequently, his participation in IPL 2023 remains uncertain.

NCA and players dealing with injuries

Over the past six months, Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar have suffered the consequences of returning to cricket prematurely, without following a phased return protocol. Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja’s comeback was delayed after the National Cricket Academy attempted to rush his return to competitive cricket.

Despite Shreyas Iyer’s determination to return to the field, back injuries are notoriously difficult to manage, and the medical team will always err on the side of caution. Therefore, it is highly probable that Iyer will be unable to participate in the upcoming ODI series. If subsequent scans reveal additional complications, his involvement in IPL 2023 is uncertain, at least in the early stages of the tournament.
