Unfortunately, Kumble was caught off guard and took his eyes off the ball, missing the line of delivery. The ball hit him in the jaw, causing significant damage. He was immediately taken to the hospital for an X-ray, which revealed a broken jaw and dislocated teeth. Kumble was scheduled to fly back to Bangalore the following day for surgery.

Despite being in immense pain and facing potential fatal consequences if he got injured again, Kumble was determined to play in the match. Despite the concerns of the Indian physio, Andrew Leipus, Kumble was resolute in his decision to bowl the next day. He stated, "At least I can now go home with the thought that I tried my best".
