India was missing several key players, including Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. When India resumed their innings on the fifth day, facing a target of 328, the spotlight was firmly on Pant, the hero of the third Test in Sydney. Joining the fray with India at 167 for 3, Pant displayed remarkable composure while sticking to his aggressive playing style.
In spite of wickets falling at the other end, Pant remained unaffected to the mounting pressure, maintaining a brisk scoring rate. He fearlessly took on the Australian bowlers, leaving the Gabba crowd awestruck with his dazzling strokeplay, which included nine fours and a six. While Cheteshwar Pujara provided crucial support in their partnership, it was Pant’s brilliance that ultimately tilted the game in India’s favour. Shubman Gill also contributed significantly with a resilient 91-run innings, stabilising the early stages of the innings.
This victory was historic, as it marked India’s triumph over Australia on their home soil, particularly at a venue that had been considered their ‘Fortress’ due to their undefeated streak for the past 32 years.
