Steve Smith sledges himself after getting hit by ball

Flamboyant batsman Steve Smith was one of the players who was instrumental in Australia's victory during the match as he scored 36 runs off of 68 balls in response to the visitor's 152-run first innings tally. The Proteas paceman Anrich Nortje, though, struck a short pitch ball that did not notably bounce as it should have during the match's 18th over, catching Smith off surprise.

Following a brutal blow to the batter, Smith made a humorous self-deprecating joke. Just before the end of the innings, Nortje knocked him out for 36 runs, giving Australia a score of 4-144. Smith was heard saying on the stump, “Yeah, have some of that Smudge!”

The Australians enjoyed a magnificent performance as they restricted the visitors to 99 runs in their second innings, leaving the former with a 34-run goal. Despite some early difficulties in their fourth innings, the Australians eventually chased down the target and are currently up 1-0 in the series.

Australia and India move up in the WTC points table

The victory has greatly improved the team's chances of making it to the championship game of the ICC World Test Championship for the 2021–23 cycle. Additionally, team India poses a serious threat to the Proteas, who are also competing for the summit match of the international ICC event.

At the first of their two red-ball matches, Team India defeated Bangladesh's hosts in Chattogram. What happens and which teams will formally fill the two open seats in the ICC WTC 2023 finals are still up in the air. When Australia plays South Africa in the second Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), they will try to win the series.
