Commenator calls it Ganguly’s roof

Facing veteran all-rounder Grant Flower, Ganguly took the aerial route and hit three massive sixes that momentarily shifted the spotlight from Tendulkar. This incredible display of batting earned Ganguly the accolades of commentator Tony Greig, who renamed Sharjah’s roof after the Indian opener at the time. He said, “That’s it. That’s another one. That’s a biggie! He loves that roof! He loves that roof. That’s three on the roof, three lost balls. That could’ve been called Ganguly’s roof.”

The Indian cricket team was tasked with chasing down a target of 197 set by Zimbabwe, led by Alistair Campbell. While Tendulkar was busy destroying the Zimbabwean bowling attack, Ganguly provided stability and anchored the chase for India. Despite his impressive 63* off 90 balls, Ganguly’s efforts were overshadowed by Tendulkar’s match-winning ton of 124 off 92.

The batting heroics of Ganguly and Tendulkar guided India to an impressive 10-wicket victory over Zimbabwe. Although Tendulkar was awarded the Man of the Match and the Player of the Series, Ganguly’s contribution should not be underestimated. The 1997 triangular series final at Sharjah remains an iconic moment in Indian cricket history, thanks to the incredible performances of both Ganguly and Tendulkar.
