Cricket Viral Video: During the 1997 triangular series final between India and Zimbabwe at Sharjah, Sourav Ganguly played an unforgettable innings that was almost overshadowed by Sachin Tendulkar’s masterful performance. The Prince of Kolkata, as he was fondly referred to by his fans, demonstrated his brilliance as an opener for Team India. The legendary commentators Michael Holding and Tony Greig had the privilege of witnessing Ganguly’s performance from the best seats in the stadium.
Commenator calls it Ganguly’s roof
Facing veteran all-rounder Grant Flower, Ganguly took the aerial route and hit three massive sixes that momentarily shifted the spotlight from Tendulkar. This incredible display of batting earned Ganguly the accolades of commentator Tony Greig, who renamed Sharjah’s roof after the Indian opener at the time. He said, “That’s it. That’s another one. That’s a biggie! He loves that roof! He loves that roof. That’s three on the roof, three lost balls. That could’ve been called Ganguly’s roof.”
The Indian cricket team was tasked with chasing down a target of 197 set by Zimbabwe, led by Alistair Campbell. While Tendulkar was busy destroying the Zimbabwean bowling attack, Ganguly provided stability and anchored the chase for India. Despite his impressive 63* off 90 balls, Ganguly’s efforts were overshadowed by Tendulkar’s match-winning ton of 124 off 92.
