Rohit Sharma: India suffered an early setback while chasing 195 against Afghanistan in the first ODI in Dharamsala after Rohit Sharma was run out following a mix-up with opening partner Shubman Gill. Rohit had nudged the ball towards mid-on and set off for a quick single, while Gill immediately called “no” and stayed in his crease. By the time Gill sent him back, Rohit had already run too far down the pitch to make it home safely, and Rashid Khan’s sharp throw to Rahmanullah Gurbaz ended his innings.
DON'T MISS
“He saw the replays and said it’s fine, he was run out in the last match too,” Gill said.
Rohit’s Walk-Off Sparked Speculation
Rohit looked visibly unhappy as he walked back without glancing towards Gill, fuelling chatter about frustration between the two openers. The dismissal was notable because such run-outs have been rare for Rohit, with this being only his second in international cricket over the last three years, both against Afghanistan.
Gill Defuses Talk of Tension
Asked about the incident at the post-match presentation, Gill was quick to play down any suggestion of friction within the dressing room, making clear that Rohit held no ill will over the miscommunication. Despite the early hiccup, the chase did not suffer.
India Cruise to Victory Anyway
Gill went on to play a brilliant unbeaten knock of 84 off 66 balls, guiding India to a comfortable seven-wicket win in the rain-curtailed contest.
This is not the first time the Rohit-Gill pairing has produced a running mix-up, with a similar incident occurring during a T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali in January 2024 that drew a sharper reaction from Rohit at the time. With Gill now leading the side and Rohit a senior presence in the squad, this latest episode appears to have passed without any lasting fallout, easing concerns of a brewing rift inside the team.
