ENG vs PAK: When play began on the first day of the series opener on Thursday (December 1) at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, England’s first Test series on Pakistani soil in 17 years got off to a fairytale start, scoring 506 runs for the loss of only four wickets.

Mammoth first wicket partnership of 233 runs

Zack Crawley and Ben Duckett, England’s opening pair, gave them an incredible start after captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first. They put up a record-breaking partnership of 233 runs with both players scoring centuries.

While Joe Root suffered a rare setback, the likes of Ollie Pope and Harry Brook carried on the attack by scoring lots of runs on a memorable day for the Stokes-led team, in which four players scored scored centuries.

England breaks Australia’s 112 year record

With a final score of 506/4, England became the first team in Test match history to surpass 500 runs on the opening day of play. In doing so, they surpassed Australia’s record of 112 years for the most runs scored on the first day of an international red-ball match. Australia held the record for the longest time, scoring 494 runs against South Africa in Sydney in 1910.

The 506 runs scored by England in a single Test match day rank fifth among all teams. When playing against India in a Test at Manchester in 1936, England set a record-high total of 588. In fact, four of the top five scores in the elusive list are held by England.
