FIFA World Cup 2022: Another significant charge against the host nation has been filed ahead of their opening match against Ecuador on Sunday, continuing the controversy surrounding the FIFA World Cup 2022. Qatar is accused pf paying 7.4 million dollars in bribes to opposition players to lose the highly-anticipated opening game.
Former FIFA head’s shocking statement
Since the competition was first given to Qatar in 2010, controversy has rosen it on and off. This is just the most recent instance. Even Sepp Blatter, the former head of FIFA, has said that Qatar’s selection as the host nation for the 2022 World Cup “was a mistake.”
Amjad Taha, regional director of the British centre in Saudi Arabia, has accused Qatar of buying opposition players to the cost of roughly INR 60 crore ahead of the World Cup opening Group A match between the host nation and Ecuador on Sunday.
Officials yet to make a statement
Taha said on Twitter that his sources were members of both teams’ insider networks, and he urged FIFA to take appropriate measures. But neither the World Cup host country nor the international organising committee have made any public statements about the matter.
Taha wrote, “Exclusive: Qatar bribed eight Ecuadorian players $7.4 million to lose the opener(1-0 2nd half). Five Qatari and #Ecadour insiders confirmed this. We hope it’s false. We hope sharing this will affect the outcome.The world should oppose FIFA corruption. @MailSport #WorldCup2022.”
The drama surrounding the FIFA World Cup in Qatar has continued, with this newest incident occurring as a result of the host country’s human rights policies and the alleged deaths of thousands of migrant labourers.
