FIFA World Cup 2022: Andre Onana, the goalkeeper for Cameroon, was expelled from the World Cup on Tuesday for misconduct following an argument with coach Rigobert Song.

According to a statement from the Cameroon soccer federation, the Inter Milan goalkeeper has been "temporarily suspended" from the team and will remain out of action for the remainder of the tournament in Qatar. Onana's return flight to Milan, according to the federation, was scheduled by team.

Onana issues a contrasting statement

In the morning of Tuesday, Onana was seen at the Doha airport. Onana also made a statement about how he disagreed with Song about the team's tactics and was consequently benched for Cameroon's 3-3 draw with Serbia on Monday. In a statement, Onana said “I have put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side,” Onana said. “Some moments are difficult to assimilate.”

According to Onana, he respected the judgments "of the people in charge." Onana participated in Cameroon's opening World Cup match, a 1-0 defeat to Switzerland, but was benched for the Serbia match and did not travel to Al Janoub Stadium with the rest of the team. Without its star goalkeeper, Cameroon rallied from a 3-1 deficit to draw 3-3.

Had to take 'strong action': Coach Rigobert

Song acknowledged that it was risky to start with Devis Epassy, the backup goalkeeper, but insisted that he had to use "strong action" to stop the 26-year old Onana, one of Cameroon's top players.

He further clarified that “If you can’t fit in with what’s required to be part of a squad then I do think that you need to step up to the plate and accept responsibility for that because the team, the squad, is more important than the interests of any individual.” Song stated that he expects "discipline and respect" from each of his players.

Coach Song is a former captain of Cameroon

Onana denied breaking any team discipline policies in his statement, but he did express disappointment that he had been "not allowed" to play the Serbia game with the team.

After Toni Conceicao led the team to third place at the African Cup of Nations this year and narrowly missed the final with a loss to Egypt in a penalty shootout, Song, a former Cameroonian captain, was appointed coach in February, taking everyone by surprise.
