FIFA World Cup 2022: Enner Valencia’s goal-scoring display in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 between Ecuador and the hosts Qatar made headlines for all the right reasons on Sunday at the biggest stage in football. In the tournament’s opening match between the two nations at the Al Bayt Stadium, Valencia changed the course of history in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

First goal was turned down by VAR
Within the opening three minutes of the game, Valencia believed he had scored the decisive first goal. Valencia’s attempt to score the quickest opening goal in FIFA World Cup history was halted by Video Assistant Referee (VAR), who disallowed his early effort after a thorough goal check. Valencia made apologies, though, and scored the game’s first goal in the 16th minute.
Scored another one and created history
He was struck in the penalty area, resulting in a spot kick for Ecuador. At the FIFA World Cup 2022, Valencia managed to send the goalie the wrong way to give La Tri Los Amarillos (the Yellows) an early lead. In addition to becoming Ecuador’s top goal scorer at the FIFA World Cup, Valencia made history by scoring the team’s memorable opening goal. The 33-year-old has four goals to his credit for South America at the FIFA World Cup.
Valencia surpassed the record of Agustin Delgado. He doubled his goal total before the end of the first half, making him Ecuador’s all-time best scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Defeated the host nation by 2-0
In the game’s 31st minute, the Fenerbahce SK player scored his second goal. With Valencia’s two goals, Ecuador defeated Qatar by 2-0 in front of 67,372 spectators at the Al Bayt Stadium. The Netherlands and Gustavo Alfaro’s team will square off on Friday in Group A action at the tournament.
