FIFA World Cup 2022: Pepe and Fernandes slam referee, say “Give title to Argentina” after Morocco’s shocking win | Details here

FIFA World Cup 2022: The 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal saw Morocco getting an unexpected win against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. The third quarterfinal encounter, which took place at the Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday night, saw the star-studded European team fall to an unexpected 0-1 defeat to the African team Morocco.

The 2016 Euro champions were considered the favourites to win this match, but to everyone’s surprise, Morocco defeated Portugal and advanced to the FIFA World Cup semifinals for the first time ever.

Cristiano Ronaldo was benched yet again

Once again, in this crucial quarterfinal game, Portugal coach Fernando Santos made the decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo. He didn’t come on until the 51st minute of the second half, when Portugal was already down a goal following Youssef En-opening Nesyri’s goal in the 42nd minute of play.

Ronaldo and other Portugal players made every effort to equalise, but the Moroccan team, which has won three straight games without conceding a goal, stood firm and prevented a comeback.

Many decisions in Portugal’s game against Morocco went against them, and the experienced defender Pepe and the star midfielder Burno Fernandes criticised the Argentine referee in charge of the game, Facundo Tello, for making the harsh judgments. FIFA can now award the trophy to Argentina, according to the duo.

Pepe and Fernandes slam the referee

Pepe slammed the referee by saying, “It is unacceptable that an Argentine referee administered the game today after what happened yesterday.”

“With Messi complaining and Argentina talking, I’m not saying it’s conditional, but what did we play in the second half? Anything. Their goalkeeper was always stopped, and they only added eight minutes of injury time. After what I saw today, they can now give the title to Argentina.”

Burno, a star for Manchester United, joined Pepe in his outburst and expressed similar feelings, alleging it was “strange” for an Argentine referee to oversee their match following Argentina’s qualification. “I don’t know if they are going to give the cup to Argentina. I’m going to say what I think. It’s very strange that a referee from a team that is still in the World Cup is in charge.”
