Following India's disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly implementing stricter rules for the team. Sources revealed to India Today that the board plans to limit family time for players during tours and enforce stricter team travel regulations.
Family Time Curbed, Team Travel Rules Tightened Post Australia Debacle
The new policies include restricting the presence of wives and girlfriends (WAGs) to a maximum of 14 days during tours lasting over 1.5 months. On shorter tours, the limit will be reduced to 7 days. Players’ families will no longer be allowed to stay for the entire duration of a tournament.
Gautam Gambhir’s Personal Manager Not Allowed in VIP Box, BCCI Likely to Implement Strict Rules After India's Loss in BGT
Other measures include mandatory team bus travel for all players and restrictions on extra luggage. The BCCI will cover baggage up to 150 kg, beyond which players must pay the additional charges themselves.
These rules follow a series of controversies during the Australia tour, including dressing room discord and players traveling separately. For instance, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah traveled with their families while the rest of the team moved together. Reports also indicated the team did not celebrate their Perth win collectively, highlighting a lack of cohesion.
Additionally, Gautam Gambhir’s personal manager has been barred from sitting in the VIP box or traveling on the team bus. He will be required to stay in a different hotel.
The BCCI, which recently conducted a review meeting with Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, emphasized avoiding rash decisions ahead of the Champions Trophy, scheduled in six weeks. However, the new rules aim to foster discipline and improve team unity.
