PR Sreejesh has been a legend in Indian hockey for so many years now. He was bigger than the ‘Great Wall Of China’ when he was in front of the net. One of the most decorated goalkeepers of all time and his retirement has been beautiful so far.
Firstly, he was appointed as the coach for the Indian youth team and everyone supported that decision. And now, Hockey India announced on Wednesday that they would retire the jersey number worn by the legendary goalkeeper.
It is a heartwarming and huge decision by the federation and once again everyone is supporting the decision. The fans are jubilant over this decision as Sreejesh has become a national hero and no matter what anyone does, his efforts for the team can never be repaid.
A Legend!
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said Sreejesh has earned the right to be considered the “God of Modern Indian Hockey”. The federation also formally announced that Sreejesh will take up the role of junior national coach.
Hockey India’s Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh stated, “Sreejesh is now going to be the junior team coach and we are retiring the No. 16 jersey for the senior team. We are not retiring No. 16 for the junior team.”
Singh was excited about the appointment and stated, “Sreejesh will groom the next Sreejesh in the junior team, who will wear the No. 16 jersey.”
PR Sreejesh As A Coach?
This appointment as junior national coach also begs the question of Sreejesh’s desire to coach the national side. The Indian goalkeeper cleared that out and stated that he would take Rahul Dravid’s route as a coach.
“I want to become a coach. That was always my plan but now there is a question of when. After retirement, family comes first. The way I wanted is start with the juniors, and Rahul Dravid is an example. It’s like you develop a bunch of players, get them into the senior team, and let them follow you.”
He laid out a whole plan for the junior team and stated that he would be ready for the senior team in 2032. “If India”If India gets to host the 2036 Olympic Games, I want to be the India coach,” Sreejesh added.
