Hockey World Cup 2023: After edging Belgium in a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday, Germany won the Hockey World Cup for the third time in team history. After trailing by two goals early on, the German team rallied back to win the game 5-4 in the shootout to win the title three times.

In the top matchup in Bhubaneshwar, the Germans overcame a two-goal deficit through the efforts of Niklas Wellen, Gonzalo Peillat, and Mats Grambusch to overcome the reigning champions. With a 2-0 lead after just ten minutes, Belgium got off to the best possible start. In the ninth minute, Belgium took the lead thanks to a goal by Florent van Aubel. As the game was equally balanced at the moment, Peillat then stepped up to the challenge and tied it at 2-2 with a penalty corner in the 40th minute. The goal stunned Belgium, and they immediately started applying pressure inside the German circle. Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Tom Boon scored from a penalty corner to square the game at 3-3 and force a shootout.
