Hockey World Cup 2023: South Korean shutterbug falls in Bhubaneswar’s open drain, hospitalised | Details here

Hockey World Cup 2023: A photo journalist was hospitalised on Wednesday after slipping into an open drain in the state’s capital city, despite the Odisha government having spent millions of rupees transforming Bhubaneswar in preparation for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup.  As per Vijay Amruta Kulange, Bhubaneswar municipal corporation commisioner, the organisation is currently investigating the matter and will comment only after all the facts get verified.

The journalist was drinking tea while he fell

According to early reports, the journalist who is currently in Bhubaneswar to cover the Hockey World Cup slipped into the open drain while drinking tea at a roadside vendor in the Dumduma region. Eyewitnesses state that he was so focussed on taking teh picture that he did not even see the drain and fell straight onto it.

The photojournalist was taken to a hospital for treatment after he was taken out from the drain. It is important to note that, in preparation for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), the government of Odisha, and other relevant government organisations did all possible to completely transform the city’s appearance.

Beautification of Bhuvneshwar

Numerous street hawkers were removed, roads were rebuilt, and extensive beautification and electrical projects were also carried out on a military basis. But given that there have been other bizarre accidents comparable to the one in which a South Korean photojournalist was hurt after slipping into an open drain, it is undoubtedly concerning.

It appears that neither the BMC nor any other relevant organisations have made any significant efforts to close these gaps and stop accidents that may even result in a person’s death.
