ICC World Cup Qualifiers: It finally happened. What West Indies cricket has dreaded for so long has finally happened. The two-time World Cup champion failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in their history.
Yes, that means World Cup 2023 will be without West Indies. The 13th edition of the World Cup will not feature the two times World Champion. A shame but also a crude reminder of how cruel this game of cricket can be.
West Indies lost their 3rd consecutive match in the Super Six stage to crash out of ICC World Cup qualifiers. Their chances of qualifying for the World Cup were diminished after the first two-loss, but Scotland made sure to put Indies out of their misery as soon as possible.
ICC World Cup Qualifiers: West Indies Knocked Out
West Indies never looked dangerous in this do-or-die match. In a match where nothing less than a win would have sufficed, Scotland completely blocked them. Scotland winning the toss also did not help their cause at all.
Brandon McMullen got three wickets in the first six overs, and after that, it was just survival mode. Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, and Nicolas Pooran tried to save the inning but failed miserably. And West Indies were all out for 181 runs.
A target that Scotland chases very easily. Matthew Cross and Brandon McMullen scored half-centuries to knock West Indies out. The win has put Scotland in a strong position. They are in third position and can climb into the top 2 if they win against Zimbabwe in their next match.
Revenge Completed
They say that cricket always comes around, and maybe that is true. Today’s results prove that to a certain extent. In 2019, it was West Indies that knocked out Scotland from World Cup qualifiers after some help from rain and some questionable umpiring decisions.
Scotland completed their revenge today by knocking West Indies out of the competition and strong holding their position. If no one believed that sports were like poetry before, they will after this result.
