IND vs NEP Asia Cup 2023: In the Group A Asia Cup 2023 match against Nepal on Monday, September 4, India’s captain Rohit Sharma played a crucial role by smashing a fifty off just 39 balls. Despite a shaky start, Rohit shifted gears and aggressively attacked the Nepal bowlers after a prolonged rain delay in the late evening in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, during their chase of 145 runs. He also surpassed Virat Kohli.
Rohit Sharma goes all-gun blazing
Rohit Sharma showed his batting prowess by hitting 5 boundaries and 3 sixes, making a strong comeback to form. Remarkably, this marked Rohit Sharma’s 49th ODI fifty and his first since his century against New Zealand in Indore on January 24, 2023.
In partnership with Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma built a formidable opening stand of over 100 runs, steering India towards a comfortable victory in the rain-affected match. Rohit Sharma’s impressive innings also saw him surpass Virat Kohli as India’s top run-scorer in the Asia Cup, surpassing Kohli’s previous total of 1046 runs. Additionally, Rohit Sharma climbed to the second position in the all-time batting charts for the tournament, overtaking the great Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 1075 runs.
In the Asia Cup, only Sanath Jayasuriya has scored more runs than Rohit Sharma, in both ODI and T20I formats. Moreover, Rohit Sharma achieved a significant milestone by hitting his 250th six as an opener, a feat shared with Sanath Jayasuriya and Chris Gayle in an exclusive ODI club. Rohit displayed no hesitation in launching towering sixes during the chase, as India pursued 145 runs in 23 overs under the DLS system. Rohit Sharma has accumulated one century and nine half-centuries in the Asia Cup, whereas Virat Kohli boasts four centuries and an equal number of half-centuries in the same tournament.
