IND vs SL Asia Cup 2023 Final: On Sunday, September 17, in the Asia Cup final at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, India achieved their largest victory in terms of balls remaining in ODIs. India sealed the match with a remarkable 263 balls to spare, surpassing their previous record set back in 2001 against Kenya in Bloemfontein when they won with 231 balls remaining in their innings.
India’s dominating victory
The Indian cricket team, often referred to as the Men in Blue, also achieved the distinction of securing the sixth-largest margin of victory in the history of ODIs. The top five spots in this category are held by England (277 balls vs Canada in 1979), Sri Lanka (274 balls vs Zimbabwe in 2001), Sri Lanka (272 balls vs Canada in 2003), Nepal (268 balls vs USA in 2020), and New Zealand (264 balls vs Bangladesh in 2007).
India, having been asked to field first, successfully bowled out Sri Lanka for a mere 50 runs in 15.2 overs. Mohammed Siraj was the star with six wickets, decimating the home team’s batting lineup. Notably, Siraj became just the third bowler, following Lasith Malinga and Chaminda Vaas, to claim four wickets in a single over in ODIs.

The havoc began with Jasprit Bumrah’s dismissal of Kusal Perera, while Hardik Pandya swiftly wrapped up the tail by securing three wickets. The subsequent run-chase posed no threat to India’s in-form batting unit, as they effortlessly reached the target in 6.1 overs.
None of the Sri Lankan batsmen could pose a significant challenge to the exceptional form of the Indian bowlers. Kusal Mendis top-scored with 17 runs from 34 deliveries, while Dushan Hemantha chipped in with 13 runs from 15 balls; these were the only two Sri Lankan batsmen who managed to reach double figures. In addition to Mohammed Siraj‘s impressive performance, Hardik Pandya concluded with figures of 3/3, taking 2 wickets in 2 consecutive deliveries to swiftly close out the Sri Lankan innings.
