IND vs WI: Controversy! Not-Out Shubman Gill Returns to Pavillion, Umpires & Suryakumar Yadav’s Mistake costs opener

IND vs WI

IND vs WI: In their fifth T20I match against West Indies on Sunday, August 13, at Lauderhill’s Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, India had a poor beginning. While batting first, India encountered the loss of both their opening batsmen. However, Shubman Gill’s dismissal has now taken the social media by storm as he was ‘wrongly’ given out by the umpire.

Shubman Gill wrongly given out

The Player of the Match from the previous game, Yashasvi Jaiswal, fell victim to Akeal Hosein’s bowling in the opening over of the current match. Akeal Hosein, the West Indies spinner, continued to trouble India as he dismissed Shubman Gill in the third over, who had managed to score nine runs off nine balls.

Gill was declared out with an LBW decision while attempting a sweep shot against Akeal. The umpire promptly raised his finger following a vigorous appeal from the West Indies players. Gill himself appeared unsure and decided to seek advice from Suryakumar Yadav, who was at the non-striker’s end. However, despite their discussion, Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t decipher the delivery, and he advised Gill against making a review.

Although the 23-year-old batter left the field seemingly unconvinced, the astonishment was palpable among the fans when the replay was showcased on the screen. The ball’s trajectory clearly indicated that it had missed the leg stump, implying that Gill was not out. The Indian team’s support staff on the sidelines expressed their disbelief as they watched the replay on their monitors.

This marked Gill’s fourth instance of scoring in single digits throughout the five-match T20I series. His struggle to maintain consistency across formats had been evident since the culmination of the Indian Premier League 2023. While he did manage to notch up only his second score of 50 or more in the fourth T20I, signaling a potential return to form, the unfortunate and unjust dismissal in the fifth T20I is likely to disrupt his progress once again.
