Indore Pitch: Controversy? ICC takes back ‘poor’ rating and affirms ‘below average’ after BCCI intervenes, details here

Indore Pitch: Earlier this month, a Test match between India and Australia was played at the Indore pitch, which was rated “poor” by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and received three demerit points. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appealed the decision and the ICC has now changed the rating to ‘below average’. The appeal was made because the match ended within three days and the BCCI felt that the pitch was not as bad as initially rated.

ICC panellists change the Indore Pitch rating

During the India vs Australia test match in Indore, 31 wickets fell within two days, out of which 26 were picked by spinners. Following Australia’s victory on the third morning of the match, ICC Match Referee Chris Broad criticized the pitch, stating that it was very dry and lacked a balance between the bat and ball. He also mentioned that the pitch favoured spinners from the beginning. This led to a lot of criticism about the pitch.

After the Border-Gavaskar series concluded, the BCCI made an appeal to the ICC. A panel, consisting of Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket, and Roger Harper, ICC Men’s Cricket Committee Member, reviewed the footage from the Test match.

Both panellists, Wasim Khan and Roger Harper agreed that while the Match Referee followed the pitch monitoring guidelines, there wasn’t enough uneven bounce to warrant the “poor” rating. The pitch was then re-rated from “poor” to “below average,” and instead of receiving three demerit points, it will now receive only one.

India emerged victorious in the series by a margin of 2-1. Both the teams will now take on each other in World Test Championship Final, which is scheduled to take place in June in the Oval. This will be Kangaroo’s maiden appearance in the finale while a second consecutive appearance for Men in Blue, who earlier lost the first one against Kiwis in 2021.
