Injury woes continue to grapple IPL 2023 ! KKR captain Shreyas Iyer likely to MISS tournament and WTC

IPL 2023

IPL 2023: Shreyas Iyer, one of India’s best middle-order batters, is likely to miss the all of the 2023 IPL and the next World Test Championship (WTC) Final owing to a major back injury, which has shocked the Indian cricket team and fans. Earlier the reports stated that he would miss just the opening games but with the new development, it is likely that he would require at least four-five months to get fit.

Trouble begins for KKR ahead IPL 2023

This has led to a severe blow to not only the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but also to the Indian cricket team, as he is now expected to miss out on the upcoming World Test Championship Final due to his injury. With the tournament scheduled to begin on March 31, and KKR’s first match on April 1, the team will have to find a new captain quickly, as the situation demands.

Iyer played for India in the Test series against Australia, however, he reported discomfort during the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Ahmedabad. The batter had to leave the game after being sent for scans.

The team management had shown faith on Iyer with the number 4 spot, an injury to him has forced the team to turn to Suryakumar Yadav, who hasn’t exactly capitalised on his opportunities, going out for two back-to-back golden ducks in the first two ODIs against Australia.

Who will replace Shreyas Iyer?

It would be fascinating to watch if the Rohit Sharma-led team continues to trust Suryakumar or tries someone like Sanju Samson who is waiting for his opportunities on the sidelines given the uncertainty surrounding Iyer’s recovery and the little amount of ODIs left before the World Cup.
