Meanwhile, 5-times trophy-winning captain Rohit Sharma, who will also be celebrating his 36th birthday, completed his 150th match as skipper in the tournament.

1000 games in IPL

Fifteen years ago, the cash-rich T20 league, which revolutionized T20 cricket and had a significant impact on the sporting landscape in India, began with a highly anticipated inaugural match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. The Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced in 2008, and after 15 years of thrilling cricket action, it has now achieved the remarkable feat of reaching the 1000-game milestone.

In honour of the momentous 1000th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Wankhede Stadium was adorned with festive decorations as the Mumbai Indians clashed with the Rajasthan Royals. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) orchestrated a grand celebration to mark this historic event. Volunteers brandished special flags, while video clips from past editions of the league were showcased, creating an atmosphere of nostalgia. Additionally, the Indian board bestowed special mementoes upon the captains, Rohit Sharma and Sanju Samson, as a token of appreciation for their participation in this significant milestone.

It was a momentous occasion for Rohit Sharma as he reached a significant milestone in his captaincy journey during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The match against Rajasthan Royals marked his 150th appearance as captain for the Mumbai Indians. Rohit has been leading the team for ten IPL seasons, taking over the captaincy reins from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the 2013 season.

Under Rohit’s leadership, the Mumbai Indians have made it to the playoffs six times and emerged victorious in five IPL tournaments (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020). On his 36th birthday, which fell on Sunday, April 30, Rohit achieved 81 wins out of 149 matches as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, making him the second-most successful IPL captain in terms of victories, just behind the legendary MS Dhoni, who has 128 wins to his name.
