Jyothi Yarraji :In breaking her own record at the National Open Athletics Championships on Monday, Jyothi Yarraji made history by being the first Indian woman to run the 100-metre hurdles in under 13 seconds while doing so.

The 23-year-old Yarraji, running for Railways, won in 12.82 seconds and was unable to be stopped from breaking the national record time again despite the wind gauge indicating 0.9m/s.

She had triumphed in the same competition in the National Games in Gandhinagar with a time of 12.79 seconds, although she had been helped by wind that was stronger than allowed. The "13.04" record she posted in May was her previous national record.

She was comfortably victorious in the final after gaining the lead by the time the seven competitors reached the second hurdle.

With just one slip-up at the National Inter-State Championships in Chennai in June, the Railways star, who is from Andhra Pradesh and trains in Bhubaneswar, finished off a strong campaign.

This made her the second-fastest Asian in the competition this year, and she secured a spot just outside the top 10 Asians of all time. She has broken the national record three times this year. On May 22, at Loughborough University, she surpassed Anuradha Biswal's national record of 13.38, set in 2002.
