Karim Benzema of Real Madrid received the prestigious trophy for the first time at the 2022 Ballon d’Or event, which was hosted by France Football.
Due to his 44 goals and 15 assists in 46 games last season, Benzema, who won La Liga and the Champions League in 2021–2022, was the clear favourite to win the Ballon d’Or at Monday’s presentation in Paris. He is the first Frenchman to win the award since Zinedine Zidane in 1998 and the sixth overall.
Thibaut Courtois, a Real Madrid teammate and winner of the 2022 Yacine Award, has been outstanding for the Spanish champions. In the Champions League final a year ago, he gave an outstanding performance against English champions Manchester City.
For Karim Benzema, being named the winner of the most prestigious individual football award is the pinnacle of recognition for his outstanding performances with Real Madrid last season and proof that he has changed as a person and player during his time away from the French national team due to a sextape scandal.
Despite having six nominations on the final Ballon d’Or list, the blue side of Manchester won the Club of the Year honour.
For the second year in a running, Barcelona won the Kopa Trophy, which is given to the young player of the year. Gavi received the honour on behalf of Catalunya. The Women’s Ballon d’Or 2022 was won by FC Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, with Beth Mead of Arsenal coming in second.
