Neeraj Chopra: On Sunday, Neeraj Chopra accomplished a momentous accomplishment by securing the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in the men's javelin throw final held in Budapest. This victory made him the first Indian athlete to achieve such a milestone. During the final event, Chopra's second attempt astoundingly thre the javelin to a remarkable distance of 88.17 meters, holding the leading position in the competition.
Neeraj Chopra clinches yet another gold
Neeraj's achievement stands as a substantial advancement from his previous performance in the 2022 edition of the Championships, where he had earned a silver medal. Despite being the reigning Olympic gold medalist, Neeraj Chopra encountered a less-than-ideal beginning in the final event. His initial throw covered a mere distance of 79 meters, which left him dissatisfied.
In response, Neeraj opted not to record the score at all. He deliberately stepped over the line, resulting in a foul. However, the trajectory of events shifted dramatically in his favour during the second attempt in the final. Boosted by the overwhelming support of the enthusiastic crowd, Chopra embarked on his run-up and, adhering to his characteristic style, commenced celebrating even before the javelin could touch down.
Neeraj Chopra's fellow competitor from Pakistan, Arshad Nadeem, secured the second position with a narrow gap, closely trailing behind the Indian gold medalist, reaching a distance of 87.82 meters. The bronze medal was claimed by Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, who achieved a throw of 86.67 meters.

Neeraj Chopra, currently holding the top position in the javelin world rankings, claimed the Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020. However, he secured a silver medal at the world championships in Eugene last year, where Anderson Peters emerged as the gold medalist. Anju Bobby George remains the sole other Indian to have achieved a medal at the world championships, having won bronze in the women's long jump event in 2003 in Paris.
During the qualification round for the men's javelin final at the 2023 competition, Neeraj displayed exceptional performance by needing just one throw to secure a spot in the Sunday event. The Olympic champion accomplished a remarkable distance of 88.77 meters in his first attempt, thus guaranteeing his direct advancement to the final stage.
