Nick Kyrgios: Tennis star admits being guilty in assault case with former girlfriend, escapes conviction

Nick Kyrgios: Tennis player Nick Kyrgios admitted to hitting his former girlfriend on Friday, but he was spared a sentence for what the judge called a “single act of stupidity.” The assault accusation against the Australian footballer, 27, was dropped by the Canberra magistrate. Ten months after their breakup, Passari reported incident to the police, according to the lawyers’ testimony during the trial.

Nick Kyrgios is facing mental health issues

The victim, Passari, told the court that the assault had left her deeply traumatized, causing her to lose a significant amount of weight and spend most of her time in bed, unable to sleep or start new relationships. Kyrgios’s lawyers attempted to have the charge of common assault dismissed, citing mental health as the reason and claiming that it was a one-time incident that was not typical of his behaviour.

A psychologist, Sam Borenstein, informed the court that Kyrgios struggled with major depression, which included intense feelings of despair, thoughts of self-harm, insomnia, restlessness, and guilt. Borenstein added that Kyrgios had used alcohol and drugs as a way to cope but was now making positive steps towards addressing these issues.

Magistrate Campbell listened to the defense’s argument but ultimately rejected it. Campbell declared that Kyrgios acted recklessly, but that the incident was a spontaneous and impulsive mistake made by a young man trying to exit a challenging scenario. Kyrgios was accused of shoving Passari, who was hindering his departure from her home in Canberra.

Campbell remarked, “I do not record a conviction against your name, I do not find any necessity to place you on a good behaviour bond.”
