Rohit Sharma: Captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Rohit Sharma, has raised concerns about the pivotal number four position in the Indian ODI cricket team, highlighting that no player has managed to solidify this role since the retirement of Yuvraj Singh. India’s issue with the fourth spot

As the 50-over World Cup looms within a mere two months, the Indian squad is grappling with the challenge of identifying an apt contender for the coveted No. 4 spot. This issue echoes the struggles encountered during the previous 2019 edition of the tournament held in England. Making his return after a protracted injury hiatus, Shreyas Iyer exhibited commendable performance across 20 matches at the No. 4 position, accumulating an impressive 805 runs with an average of 47.35. His record includes two centuries and five half-centuries.

What did Rohit Sharma say?

Rohit stated, “Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well – his numbers are really good.”

Adding further, he said, “Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there.” Pointing out a significant setback, the captain of the Indian team highlighted that the substantial frequency of injuries to crucial players had significantly impacted the team’s progress over the extended period.

Rohit Sharma on Injuries

Speaking on the issue further, Rohit stated, “The percentage of injuries that have happened in the last 4-5 years is massive. When the players get injured or are not available, you try doing different things with different players – that is what I have to say about No. 4. Even before when I was not the captain, I was watching no? There were so many guys who came in and went out. But injuries kept them away or they were not available or someone lost form.”
