Berlin
Kalpana Jena won thw silver medal in World Summer Games 2023 in cycling event in the games played in Berlin in Germany.

Berlin: In a superhuman feat, a differently-abled girl from Odisha, Kalpana Jena, has won a silver medal in World Summer Games 2023. Kalpana took part in a cycling event in the games played in Berlin in Germany.

Kalpana not only had to defeat her disability but she was constantly fighting poverty where her parents couldn’t even afford a bicycle for her. With her resilience, she not only fought against all odds but defeated them with flying colors.

She used to practice with her friend’s bicycle constantly and achieved several national laurels to her name. But even in their wildest dreams, her family couldn’t be imagined what she has just achieved. Only one person had the belief in her and that was Kalapana herself, and with her belief, she made it possible.

A Close Contest

Kalpana clocked a timing of 5:42.42 to achieve the silver medal. While her Indian counterpart Shivani clocked 5:22.41 to win the gold medal. Shivani won three gold medals at the Special Olympics World Games held in Berlin earlier this year.

Kalpana has received training in various sports including badminton, athletics, and floorball. Her cycling skills were found and honed by multiple-time National cycling champion of India, Satbir Singh Sahota.

“Could Not Have Imagined It”

Her parents could not have ever imagined what Kalpana has just achieved. They never had any kind of expectations from her because of her condition but she proved everyone wrong. They also asked the Government to help Kalpana financially so she can win more medals in the future.

“We had never imagined that Kalpana has so much talent. She is determined to make a successful career in sports. However, we feel helpless for not being able to provide her the required financial support and exposure.”

But Kalpana did not need anyone as she believed in herself and that was enough for her. “I was hopeful to win the gold. However, the food provided to us in Berlin was not good. I participated in the competition almost with an empty stomach. However, I am so happy that I finished second amid the tough competition between so many participants across the globe.” Kalpana stated.
