Paris Olympics 2024: Sports is weird. Last night every Indian was sad and crying when Nisha Dahiya faced a heartbreaking exit from the Olympics. And now the whole nation is jubilant because of the same sport Vinesh Phogat created history.
Vinesh was facing World Number 1 and defending Olympic champion Yu Susaki in the Women’s Freestyle 50kg event. No one gave Vinesh a chance in the match considering who her opponent was.
But Vinesh, who is playing her third Olympic, would not let anything come in between her dreams this time. The Asian and Commonwealth champion was brilliant and did not let the Japanese wrestler score even a single point and made her sensational comeback in the last second.
What A Comeback!
Yu Susaki won the gold medal in the same category in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. To defeat her, Vinesh had to strategize and follow that strategy perfectly, as one hiccup would have cost her the match.
And as expected, Vinesh came to the match prepared and followed that strategy till the end. She did not let the Japanese wrestler score one point and focused on her defense until the last moment.
Vinesh lost 2 points due to the passive nature of her game but she knew she could come back. The score was 2-0 in favor of Susaki until the last 30 seconds. That is when Phogat started to attack.
With just 7 seconds left on the clock, Vinesh was able to connect with her move and scored 3 points on the trot. It was an upset and a warning to the world that this girl was not going to back down no matter who.
Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat!
Vinesh has now qualified for the quarterfinals which will be played in a few hours. Susaki will get another chance if Vinesh wins her match. But the Indian wrestler has made it clear that she is not an underdog at the Paris Olympics 2024 event but rather a serious contender.
