PM Modi extend greetings to Indian football team on SAFF Championships triumph

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian football team after their victory in the SAFF Championship final against Kuwait. The Indian team won the SAFF Championship title in the penalty shootout after the game ended 4-4 at the Sree Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium on Tuesday.

PM Modi tweeted “India crowned champions, yet again! The Blue Tigers reign supreme at the #SAFFChampionship2023! Congrats to our players. The Indian Team’s remarkable journey, powered by the determination and tenacity of these athletes, will continue to inspire upcoming sportspersons.”

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also congratulated the Indian team

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also congratulated the Indian team for the win on his Twitter handle. “We’ve done it again! Congratulations to the #BlueTigers for keeping their composure in such a thrilling encounter with Kuwait in the final and putting on a stellar performance to win the #SAFFChampionship for a record-tying time. India is thrilled with your victory, stay Cham Cham!” Thakur wrote in his tweet.

Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu once again made the difference for the Blue Colts as he saved a crucial penalty kick in the summit clash as India beat Kuwait 5-4 in the shootout.
After five rounds of penalty kicks, the scoreline was 4–4 and both sides missed one penalty each, and the sudden death rule was lifted.

Mahesh Naurem went ahead and scored for the Indian team. Sandhu had a tough challenge ahead as Kuwait captain Khalid Hajiya stepped up to level the scoreline.

Sandhu made a diving save to keep Khalid’s shot away from the goal line. As soon as he saved the penalty, he ran in and had a live celebration in front of the home fans.

With this win, Indian head coach Igor Stimac has become the first foreign head coach to win consecutive SAFF Championship titles. It was also the first time that after winning the semi-final against Lebanon, India defeated two West Asian nations in consecutive matches, that too on penalties.
