This triumph takes Praggnanandhaa into an eagerly anticipated face-off against the World No. 1, Magnus Carlsen.

Praggnanandhaa secures berth in final

Showing exceptional skill, Praggnanandhaa clinched the semi-final with a score of 3.5-2.5 in the heart of Baku, Azerbaijan. This momentous win not only secures his place in the highly anticipated Candidates 2024 tournament but also cements his position as a rising star in the chess world. Praggnanandhaa managed to outwit the third-ranked player in the world, Caruana, as the initial two-game classical series concluded in a 1-1 draw in Baku. Praggnanandhaa ultimately emerged as the victor in a captivating tie-breaker round.

In the semi-final match of the FIDE World Cup, the young Grandmaster found himself on even footing with his opponent after the conclusion of the second game on Sunday. This pivotal moment led to a tie-breaker, where a decisive winner would be determined. Praggnanandhaa of India and the third-ranked player globally, Caruana, concluded their Sunday match with a tied score after 47 moves.

Prior to this, Praggnanandhaa had mirrored the achievement initially accomplished by the renowned Indian chess legend, Anand. By entering the semi-finals of the World Cup, Praggnanandhaa joined the ranks as the second Indian chess player to accomplish this remarkable feat. Chess icon Viswanathan Anand bestowed accolades upon the Indian Grandmaster, expressing nothing but admiration for the 18-year-old Indian prodigy through a tweet.

Following his participation in the World Cup, Praggnanandhaa is poised to take center stage at the Candidates event in the upcoming year. This prestigious event in 2024 holds the key to determining the contender who will challenge the reigning World Chess Champion, Ding Liren. As the FIDE World Cup 2023 final approaches, where Carlsen is set to face off against the Indian Grandmaster, the reigning champion secured a victory in the first game against Azerbaijani player Nijat Abasov on Saturday.

Subsequently, Carlsen settled for a draw spanning 74 moves, securing his place as the inaugural finalist of the FIDE World Cup 2023 in Baku. Meanwhile, in the women's final, Aleksandra Goryachkina managed to outperform 20-year-old Bulgarian Nurgyul Salimova by emerging victorious in the second 25-minute rapid game.
