Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Cricket, Will Continue in ODIs
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years,” Rohit wrote.
He also confirmed that he would continue to play in One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India, keeping the door open for more milestones in limited-overs cricket.
A Glorious Test Career
Rohit Sharma, known for his elegance and composure, reinvented himself in the Test arena as an opener. With centuries across formats and continents, he played a vital role in India’s overseas success, especially in England, Australia, and at home.
He has been admired for his leadership, consistency, and technique, becoming a dependable top-order batter for India since transitioning into a regular Test opener in 2019.
Tributes Pour In
Following his announcement, tributes poured in from teammates, fans, and cricket legends. Many acknowledged his contribution to the longest format and celebrated his ability to adapt and excel across formats.
Rohit’s Test debut came in November 2013 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens. He scored a majestic 177, followed by another century in the next match—an extraordinary start. However, inconsistency, injuries, and competition for middle-order slots kept him out of the Test side for long stretches.
Rebirth as an Opener
The turning point came in 2019, when team management promoted Rohit to open the batting in Tests, beginning with the home series against South Africa. The move paid off immediately, as he scored three centuries, including a double hundred. This transformation silenced critics and established him as a dependable red-ball opener.
