Rohit Sharma Out, Pandya In! Mumbai Indians’ Captaincy Change Sparks 400K Twitter Unfollows, #ShameonMI Trending

Witness the social media aftermath of the Mumbai Indians' shocking captaincy switch to Hardik Pandya for Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma: Within an hour of announcing Hardik Pandya as their new captain ahead of the Indian Premier League 2024 season, the Mumbai Indians had lost 400,000 Twitter followers. Pandya was declared the team’s new captain on December 15. The five-time IPL champion Rohit Sharma will be replaced by the former captain of the Gujarat Titans.

Five IPL Titles in Command since 2013

Since taking over the Mumbai Indians in 2013, Sharma has won a record five titles, a feat that Mahendra Singh Dhoni matched in the 2023 Indian Premier League. Sharma will not be leading his team in the 2024 Indian Premier League, having not played Twenty20 Internationals for India since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India. Following India’s devastating defeat in the 2023 World Cup final, the captain of India took a break from cricket. He will make a comeback in the two-match Test series against South Africa, which begins on December 26.

Pandya’s Captaincy Aligns with MI’s Future-Ready Philosophy

“It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season,” Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance, Mumbai Indians said.

Hardik Pandya Returns to Mumbai Indians After Leading Gujarat Titans

After two years as the captain of the Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya, who made his IPL debut for the Mumbai Indians, is back with the team. In their first season, Pandya guided Gujarat Titans to the IPL title, as they defeated Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 IPL final. After taking three wickets and amassing 34 runs in the final, Hardik Pandya was declared the player of the match. Pandya performed admirably with the team in 2023 as well, taking them to the championship game, where they were defeated in a thrilling last-ball match by MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.

Users Express Discontent with ‘Shame on MI’ Trend

Following the announcement of Pandya’s captaincy by the Mumbai Indians on their official Instagram account, Twitter users on X (previously known as Twitter) responded to the news by creating the trend “Shame on MI.”
