Sania Mirza: Tennis icon bids farewell to the game in Hyderabad – the city where she started playing, several VIPs in attendance

Sania Mirza: Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza bid farewell to her groundbreaking career on Sunday with tears of joy at the venue where it all started. The Lal Bahadur Tennis Stadium, where Sania marked her arrival on the grand stage with a historic WTA singles title nearly twenty years ago, was the location of her final exhibition matches.

Several VIPs attend Sania Mirza’s farewell match

After announcing her retirement from tennis at the Dubai Tennis Championships, Sania Mirza played her final match on March 5 at the Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad. She took part in several exhibition matches as part of the tournament, bidding farewell to her illustrious career.

Sania played alongside Rohan Bopanna, Yuvraj Singh, and her “best friend” Bethanie Mettek Sands to conclude her illustrious career. Eminent personalities such as the union law minister Kiren Rijiju, former India cricket team captain Mohammed Azharuddin, and popular actor Dulquer Salmaan, were present to witness the exhibition game. Sania Mirza, who arrived at the venue in a flashy red car, was greeted by enthusiastic fans, including several notable personalities. Prior to her match, MC Stan also performed for her in the venue.

Sania Mirza speaks on her greatest honour

During her farewell speech, Sania became emotional as she expressed that her greatest honour over the past 20 years has been representing her country. The occasion marked the end of an illustrious career for the six-time Grand Slam winner (three in women’s doubles and three in mixed doubles). Sania played two exhibition matches in mixed doubles and emerged victorious in both of them.
