Shafali Verma: The maiden Women's U-19 T20 World Cup began on Saturday, January 14 in South Africa. On the opening day, the Indian squad met the hosts, South Africa, at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. The Women in Blue got off to a good start, winning the opening match by seven wickets. The Shafali Verma-led team knocked down the 167-run chase in 16.3 overs for the cost of three wickets.

Shafali Verma goes berserk

The Indian captain was on fire in the opening game, scoring 45 runs off only 16 balls. During her time at the crease, she hit nine fours and one six.Five of the nine fours came in one over the other, as did the lone six. The 18-year-old hitter smacked South African player Ntabiseng Nini for five consecutive fours on the first five balls of the sixth over, and then added a six on the final ball for a total of 26 runs.

In this junior competition, Shafali made full use of her ability to play for India at the top level with the senior side, scoring 77 runs for the first wicket alongside opener Shweta Sehrawat in 7.1 overs. Shweta Kumari led the way for India in the match, scoring 92 runs off 52 balls. She hit up to 20 fours over her innings and was named player of the match.

On Monday (January 16), India will battle the United Arab Emirates in their second Group D encounter at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. During other first-day games, Bangladesh defeated Australia by 7 wickets, the UAE defeated Scotland by 6 wickets, and Sri Lanka defeated the United States by 7 wickets.
